During a recent Dallastown High School Fashion Club meeting, the members held an open discussion to brainstorm activities that would enhance their knowledge of the fashion industry. Together the club agreed to the idea of a field trip to learn about the different types of fashion stores in the York area.

Our first stop was the Walk In Closet, in the Cape Horn shopping center at 623 Lombard Road in Red Lion, PA. The store held such a wonderful experience. The owner of the store, Laurie Miller, has the most heartwarming story.

Growing up, Mrs. Miller didn't have much, most of her clothes were hand-me-downs that were not her style. Despite that, she still had a desire for fashion and tried to make the clothes stylish.

She invited friends, family and community members to consign their clothes at the Walk In Closet and from there, her business and inventory grew. Eventually, more people heard about the high-end stylish clothes and then her customer intake increased as people wished to be a part of the Walk In Closet.

Though this is already an exceptional story, during Miller’s first year, she had to close her store for three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic requirements and she also battled breast cancer. These setbacks just fueled her motivation and passion to continue. She's one of the most courageous women we’ve ever met and you can tell she truly cares about the community, the environment and recycling clothes.

This consignment store is a win-win situation for anyone. If you bring your clothes to a consignment shop, you give others who might not be able to afford high-end clothing an opportunity to create their own personal style. Additionally, instead of throwing away old styles into a landfill, you help Miller by giving her inventory and you make a quick buck off it too!

After visiting, shopping and learning about Miller’s story, we drove into downtown York and learned about the owner of Indigo Bleu, Zarah Brooks.

Brooks graduated from York College with a degree in nursing until she caught the fashion bug and shifted careers. As she found her passion through clothes, she utilized her York background and created Indigo Bleu in 2014 where she strived to bring chic clothing to her western style.

The store is located at 39 W Philadelphia St York, Pennsylvania. When you walk into the boutique, the customer feels a free-spirited, calming, and creative presence. The first few steps within the store consisted of a fragrance that is so indescribable, yet smells so clean and distinctive.

There is a colorful embodiment to Indigo Bleu and Brooks perfectly fits the essence of the boutique. The style of Indigo Bleu is a chic bohemian vibe. Brooks buys her clothes wholesale from places in Los Angeles and New York. Brooks likes to have one-of-a-kind pieces in her shop so you can find unique pieces so you can wear one of a kind outfits. Indigo Bleu has clothing and house items from $5 rings to $70 jumpers.

On our last stop we visited M.Elene.Vintage, which was founded by Molly Halbert and is filled with unique clothing, music memorabilia and other vintage goods. Halber’s motivation for opening this small business came from her desire to strengthen York as a community and her love of vintage fashion.

Initially, her business was based in a local warehouse, but she felt it was too secluded so the store moved to a historic row house in downtown York where it had its grand opening on June 4th, 2021. Since everything the store sells is vintage, M.Elene sources its goods from a mixture of places including consignment, thrift stores and Molly’s own personal collection.

Due to the diversity of the products, the price of what you're buying also varies, but there are plenty of affordable pieces and everyone can find something both they and their wallet love. Not only is M.Elene.Vintage a great place to shop, it is also an amazing gathering spot because the backyard of the establishment is often used as a venue to showcase local artists, musicians, and other small businesses.
